Sarcoptes Scabies: Scabies is a skin condition caused by the human itch mite called Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis12. The microscopic scabies mite burrows into the upper layer of the skin where it lives and lays its eggs1. Scabies is contagious and can spread quickly through close person-to-person contact in a family, childcare group, school class, nursing home or prison3. The most common symptoms of scabies are intense itching and a pimple-like skin rash1. Scabies can occur anywhere on the body, but the most common sites are between the fingers, in the armpits, around the waist, along the insides of the wrists, on the inner elbows, on the soles of the feet, on the chest, around the nipples, around the belly button, around the genitals, in the groin area and in infants and young children, common sites of scabies usually include fingers, face, scalp and neck, palms of the hands and soles of the feet3. Scabies can be easily treated with medicated skin creams or pills that kill the mites that cause scabies and their eggs3. But itching may not stop for many weeks after treatment.
